📖 What is Vedic Astrology?

Vedic Astrology, also known as Jyotish Shastra, is the ancient Indian system of astrology that originated over 5,000 years ago in the Vedic period.

The word “Jyotish” means “science of light.”

It studies how planetary positions at the time of birth influence a person's life.

It is deeply rooted in Hindu scriptures like the Vedas.

The foundational classical text is the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, attributed to sage Parashara.

🌍 Core Principles of Vedic Astrology

1️⃣ Sidereal Zodiac (Nirayana System)

Unlike Western astrology (which uses the Tropical zodiac), Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac, which is based on the actual constellations in the sky.

👉 Because of this:

Your Vedic zodiac sign may differ from your Western sun sign.

2️⃣ The Birth Chart (Janma Kundali)

The birth chart is created using:

Date of birth

Exact time of birth

Place of birth

It shows the position of planets in 12 houses and 12 zodiac signs at birth.

🌟 The 9 Planets (Navagraha)

In Vedic astrology, there are 9 celestial influences called Navagraha:

PlanetMeaning
☀ Sun (Surya)Soul, authority, father
🌙 Moon (Chandra)Mind, emotions
♂ Mars (Mangal)Energy, aggression
☿ Mercury (Budh)Intelligence, communication
♃ Jupiter (Guru)Wisdom, spirituality
♀ Venus (Shukra)Love, luxury, relationships
♄ Saturn (Shani)Karma, discipline, delays
☊ RahuObsession, worldly desires
☋ KetuDetachment, spirituality

⚠️ Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets (lunar nodes, not physical planets).

🏠 The 12 Houses (Bhavas)

Each house represents a life area:

1️⃣ Self, personality
2️⃣ Wealth, family
3️⃣ Courage, siblings
4️⃣ Home, mother
5️⃣ Education, children
6️⃣ Enemies, debts
7️⃣ Marriage, partnerships
8️⃣ Transformation, longevity
9️⃣ Luck, dharma
🔟 Career
1️⃣1️⃣ Gains, income
1️⃣2️⃣ Losses, foreign lands, moksha

⏳ The Dasha System (Timing of Events)

One of the strongest features of Vedic astrology is the Dasha system, especially the Vimshottari Dasha.

It predicts:

When marriage may happen

Career growth timing

Financial rise/fall

Health challenges

Each person runs through planetary periods in life.

Example:

Moon Mahadasha

Saturn Mahadasha

Jupiter Mahadasha

🌑 Nakshatras (27 Lunar Constellations)

Vedic astrology divides the sky into 27 Nakshatras.

Some examples:

Ashwini

Rohini

Pushya

Magha

Swati

Revati

Your Moon Nakshatra is very important in Vedic astrology.

🧘 Karma & Rebirth Concept

Vedic astrology is deeply karmic:

It believes life events are results of past-life karma.

Saturn represents karmic lessons.

Ketu represents past-life talents and detachment.

Astrology is not just predictive — it is also spiritual guidance.
